Is it time to accept the Windows 11 upgrade?

IT in Plain English

In today’s episode of IT in Plain English, Tammy Ven Dange answers, “Is it time to accept the Windows 11 upgrade?”

Windows 11 is the new operating system that Microsoft first released to the public in October 2021. It has a new design and some new functionalities, especially around cybersecurity.

So, should you go ahead and accept the free upgrade?

For most organisations, I would say NO! Windows 10 is a solid operating system that will be supported until 2025.

The main issue that you may have with Windows 11 is that it does require high minimum requirements for your devices. So, if your asset register is full of older PCs and laptops, beware, as this upgrade could impact things like the processing speed. Other issues reported have to do with capability with other applications, especially if you are self-hosting them yourselves.

The only orgs that may be safe to upgrade to Windows 11 now are those that have done a full device refresh recently and are particularly worried about cybersecurity. Otherwise, I would suggest leaving Windows 11 for a later day.

In fact, you’re better off ensuring that no device is still on Windows 8.1 as support for that operating system ends in January 2023.

So, there you have it in plain English.
