Hello!
In this Edition: How to choose an IT expert for your board, AI and data sovereignty issues, several recent NFP cyber incidents… and More!
What I’m thinking about:
- How to choose an IT expert for your Not for Profit board – I know you need more technical expertise on your board, but don’t make these mistakes when choosing your next director.
- Beware! Data sovereignty risks with AI tools! And yes, the Microsoft Copilot issue surprised me too.
What I’m reading:
- Recent cybersecurity incidents involving NFPs: Melbourne International Film Festival, NSW Rural Fire Service, Lifeline Australia, and Aeromedical Society of Australasia – a reminder that these incidents happen regularly. Don’t allow your organisation to be an easier target.
- What AI actually costs in aged care, and how to keep it onshore – another view about AI and data sovereignty that I mostly agree with.
- A self-driving Waymo just reported its own passengers to police – when technology understands poor behaviour better than humans.
- Detection Difficulty: The Boardroom’s AI Governance Blind Spot – an interesting article about the challenges of AI governance. It has a US flavour but still offers some useful advice.
- And another governance article about what happens when vendors decide to roll out AI by default: Who Decides What Runs Your Business? The Quiet Governance Question Behind the AI Rollout Backlash.
- Have you registered your organisation’s SMS sender ID? From 1 July, organisations that send branded text messages need to register their sender ID or their messages may appear as “Unverified”. If you send SMS messages to donors, members, clients, volunteers or other stakeholders, check this now.
Quote of the month:
“The organisations that are seeing the most value are those whose leaders recognise that scaling AI is not only a technology or investment challenge. It is also a challenge of people, workflows and operational, including economic, discipline.”
Steve Chase, Global Head of AI and Digital Innovation, KPMG International, Global AI Pulse Q2 2026
